School Safety During a Shooting

Question:  What are students supposed to do if there is a shooter on campus and they are outside? If building and classrooms are being locked to prevent the shooter from going in, what are the people who are already outside supposed to do? If we run, where do we run to? For this question, I emailed Jerry Rice, the head of Campus Public Safety, to make sure we were giving you accurate information. This is what he replied with: If they are outside when an alert goes out, it will depend on their exact location, if they are hearing, seeing or sensing any active threat or suspicious activity.  If they are seeing something active occurring they need to leave the area immediately (Run) or if for some reason they cannot leave then they should prepare to fight (Fight).  If they are not seeing anything active occurring do not assume that the exterior doors will be locked, go to the nearest building to lockdown in place.  Of course the Run portion is always an option, just do not run the ent

Core Curriculum Changes

Hey everyone! We hope your semester so far is smooth sailing. Earlier today, Gretchen Potters presented to Student Senate about introducing the new core. Here's what you need to know: You have the option to keep the current core or to switch over to the new one.  If you want to switch, you have the option to in Fall 2018. You just need to get the form from Advising (located in Bates), fill it out, and get it signed by the Advising Center. Very simple. If you do not want to switch, and you would like to keep the core you currently have, do nothing. The assumption is that everyone is keeping the old one instead of switching everyone over to the new one. You should definitely not switch if you're almost done or completely done with the current core. Focal Studies are not disappearing completely. They are being modified. These are now called "Explorations" and are broader than the current Focal Studies. These sections include: Artistic Practice & C

Bio 200 Spring Term

Question: I just realized that I'm registered for Bio 200 with Professor Sardinia and the lab with Professor Halpern. The times for the two classes work best with my schedule, but is it okay to take lab with a different professor? Has anyone on here done it? Does it make it more challenging to learn the content? Thanks! Answer: Because there are so many Bio classes offered, you can take a lab from a different professor than you're taking the class from. It does depend on the class, though, as this is possible with biology classes, but is likely not possible with most psychology classes. The registration through BoxerOnline is pretty good about this; if you can take them from different professors, it will let you register for them. If you can't, it won't let you sign up for them. And yes, students definitely do this! Marissa did it with Bio, and she said it was a little bit harder because she had professors with two very different teaching styles, but they were both

Winter Housing

Question: What happens to our stuff during Winter Break? Do we have to completely move out, or can we leave our stuff here? Answer: Great question! You do not need to move out of the dorms for Winter Break. Your RA will come around sometime around finals to give you a checklist that lets you know everything you need to do before you leave, because the RAs do have to go through and double check each room during the break! They're all pretty simple things like unplugging everything, cleaning out your minifridge, getting rid of any food, that sort of thing.

Hey! Welcome to Ask Boxer!

What this is all about      Ask Boxer is a place  to ask questions about anything and everything Pacific/college/life-related. Want to know what a certain class is like? Where's the coldest water fountain on campus? How realistic is it to double major? Need some advice on how to deal with roommate drama, how to get a stain out of your favorite shirt, what you could do with a history major, advice on transferring, or how to deal with paying for four years' worth of school? This is your all-in-one platform for asking all of those questions and keeping up with campus events.      See that nifty little thing in the lower righthand corner of the screen? If it says "Leave us a message", send us a question! If it says "Chat with us!", that means somebody is online and they can answer your questions right away! We will be online for about an hour most evenings (time TBA), so we will be real quick-like in our responses! (For more details on how questions
