Core Curriculum Changes

Hey everyone!

We hope your semester so far is smooth sailing. Earlier today, Gretchen Potters presented to Student Senate about introducing the new core.

Here's what you need to know:

  • You have the option to keep the current core or to switch over to the new one.
    • If you want to switch, you have the option to in Fall 2018. You just need to get the form from Advising (located in Bates), fill it out, and get it signed by the Advising Center. Very simple.
    • If you do not want to switch, and you would like to keep the core you currently have, do nothing. The assumption is that everyone is keeping the old one instead of switching everyone over to the new one. You should definitely not switch if you're almost done or completely done with the current core.
  • Focal Studies are not disappearing completely. They are being modified. These are now called "Explorations" and are broader than the current Focal Studies. These sections include:
      • Artistic Practice & Creative Process
      • Analysis & Interpretation of Texts
      • Historical Context
      • Social Systems &Human Behavior
      • Scientific Perspectives of the Natural World
      • Quantitative reasoning
    • Now, these look daunting (especially with no double dipping) but it's not. There are a large number of courses that could fulfill these requirements in various disciplines.
For more direct questions, Gretchen and the rest of advising are setting up shop around campus to answer specifics. Here are the current dates, times, and locations:
      • Monday, February 26, 5:30-7:30 pm in Mac
      • Thursday, March 1, 11:15 am-1:00 pm in the Transfer Lounge
      • Monday, March 5, 5:30-7:30 pm in Gilbert
      • Wednesday, March 7, 5:30-7:30 pm in BHam
      • Thursday, March 8, 11:15 am-1:00 pm in the UC
      • Wednesday, March 14, 11:30 am-1:30 pm in the UC
    • They will have a checklist comparing the two cores to help with deciding what to do. The CDC will also be at these locations (except the last two) to help with career advising.
