School Safety During a Shooting

Question: What are students supposed to do if there is a shooter on campus and they are outside? If building and classrooms are being locked to prevent the shooter from going in, what are the people who are already outside supposed to do? If we run, where do we run to?

For this question, I emailed Jerry Rice, the head of Campus Public Safety, to make sure we were giving you accurate information. This is what he replied with:

If they are outside when an alert goes out, it will depend on their exact location, if they are hearing, seeing or sensing any active threat or suspicious activity.  If they are seeing something active occurring they need to leave the area immediately (Run) or if for some reason they cannot leave then they should prepare to fight (Fight).  If they are not seeing anything active occurring do not assume that the exterior doors will be locked, go to the nearest building to lockdown in place.  Of course the Run portion is always an option, just do not run the entire length of campus to get off campus.
